Comprehensive guide to knee injuries including ACL tears, MCL sprains, meniscus damage with treatment from conservative to surgical and specialist access.

Medical care for knee injuries

Understanding Knee Injuries in Accidents

The knee is one of the most complex and vulnerable joints in the human body. Car accidents, falls, and sports injuries frequently result in significant damage to knee structures including ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL), menisci, cartilage, and bones. These injuries require expert diagnosis, specialized treatment, and proper rehabilitation to ensure full recovery and prevent long-term problems.

COMMON INJURY TYPES

Common Knee Injuries

1

ACL Tears (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)

One of the most serious knee injuries, ACL tears occur from sudden stops, pivoting, or direct impact. Symptoms include severe pain, immediate swelling, instability, and inability to bear weight. Treatment ranges from intensive physical therapy for partial tears to surgical reconstruction for complete tears, followed by 6-9 months of rehabilitation.

2

MCL Sprains (Medial Collateral Ligament)

MCL injuries result from direct blows to the outer knee or twisting motions. Graded from I (mild stretch) to III (complete tear), symptoms include inner knee pain, swelling, tenderness, and instability. Grade I-II sprains typically heal with conservative treatment (bracing, physical therapy) in 4-8 weeks, while Grade III may require surgery.

3

Meniscus Tears

The menisci are cartilage cushions that absorb shock in the knee. Tears can be degenerative or traumatic, causing pain, swelling, catching sensations, locking, and limited range of motion. Treatment depends on tear location, size, and pattern—ranging from rest and physical therapy to arthroscopic surgery for repair or partial removal.

4

PCL Tears (Posterior Cruciate Ligament)

PCL injuries often occur from dashboard impacts in car accidents or direct blows to the front of the knee. Less common than ACL tears, symptoms include posterior knee pain, swelling, and instability when going downstairs. Many PCL tears heal with conservative treatment, though severe cases may require surgery.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Available Treatments

Conservative Treatment

Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), physical therapy, bracing, anti-inflammatory medications, and activity modification for minor to moderate injuries.

Arthroscopic Surgery

Minimally invasive procedures using small incisions and cameras to repair meniscus tears, remove loose fragments, and reconstruct ligaments.

Ligament Reconstruction

ACL and PCL reconstruction surgery using grafts from your own tissue or donor tissue to restore knee stability and function.

Rehabilitation Program

Comprehensive physical therapy including strengthening, range of motion exercises, proprioception training, and gradual return to activity protocols.
